Gaining Trust Through Your Appearance

Judging a book by its cover.  We've all been taught that it "can't" be done, and yet we all do it...whether we want to admit it or not.  As a matter of fact, we can't help it.  Our brains are hard-wired to detect certain patterns in our environment.  Without even realizing it, we are forming judgments about people based on only seconds of information.  And once formed, these first impressions tend to stick.

Now, anyone who is in sales (and everyone is, whether explicitly or not) needs to know this and work with it to their advantage.  Certain types of clothing and certain colors convey authority and leadership.  It's not hard to envision exactly what these are...think of any politician and you've got your blueprint right there.

More difficult is convincing an ordinary person that their seemingly innocuous outfit is causing people to judge them as less trustworthy, less knowledgeable and less professional.  Think about it...if you know that dressing in a certain way was likely to lead people to see you as trustworthy and a leader,  and dressing in a different manner was likely to lead people to form the opposite opinion, wouldn't you choose the former?

You'd be surprised at how many still choose to ignore the principles of the first impression.  At I help my clients decide how they want to be perceived by the world, and then I help them build a wardrobe that will create that impression.   A first impression is a terrible thing to waste!
